No spaces, but drivers are still paying in Brighton car park

Trapped drivers are buying tickets to escape a heaving city centre car park – even if they fail to find a space.

A long line of cars stretched through Regency Square multi-storey in Brighton at the weekend, which is partially closed due to building work.

Many drivers queued for a space, only to find the council-run car park was full when it was too late to turn back.

After inching around for more than half an hour, many motorists thought they needed to buy a ticket to get through the exit barrier.

One angry driver said: “I saw at least three people paying even though they hadn’t even parked.

“People were queuing to get out for more than half an hour and there was a lot of anger.”

A spokeswoman for Brighton and Hove City Council said: “The car park is covered by CCTV and if a driver were unable to find a space while the car park is operating at reduced capacity they would not be charged when exiting the car park if they press the buzzer to speak to the control room.”

The council should put up signs explaining that ( obviously they would lose income though ! ).

That said, it would help if people read the sign near the entrance that says "No queuing past this sign" - the road is often blocked with idiots who ignore this !!!!!

Green Party notion of traffic management.

Not to mention the chaos being caused everyday by the new congestion causing pollution increasing traffic light system there with 4 sets of traffic lights within 100 yards nearly always red for no reason. This will get tourists furious during the summer.

I would guess this is more to do with the ticket machine issuing more tickets than there are spaces, no doubt as a result of the on-going building works, than the policy of a political party The car-park set-up ie ticket on entry, has been in place since I moved to Brighton some 20+ years ago (my first flat was on Regency Sq). Those choosing to ignore the 'No queueing past thiis point' sign, blocking the road etc is an issue that has been there for the same duration. But please don't let the facts get in the way of scoring a cheap political point!

Is that why there are now four sets of traffic lights there?

You should have said. You don't say that often enough.

In all fairness. When work was started on the car park, notices should have gone up suggesting people try alternative parking spots first! All those queueing cars cannot but adversely affect local air pollution and slow the work itself down.

There are actually a couple of tricks by which you can (legally) escape from a car park and barrier without paying the fees, I do it all the time and enjoy free parking galore!
