Bexhill to Hastings protesters return to hedge their bets

Protesters have returned to the site of a controversial link road to try to save a series of hedgerows.

Up to 20 activists have disrupted work on the Bexhill to Hastings Link Road since Monday.

They have also set up a new camp for the first time since they were evicted at the end of last month.

They are opposing the building of the £94 million route which will connect the A259 and B2092.

A spokeswoman for the group said: “Many of the hedgerows date back to medieval times. They are full of life and a vital part of the local environment.

“The workers only have a small window in which to complete the work with the nesting season beginning on March 1.

“We’re not giving up yet.”

Their new base, Ivy Camp, is situated between Glover’s Farm and Acton’s Farm off Crowhurst Road. A spokeswoman for East Sussex County Council said: “Extensive ecological surveys have been carried out to ensure all works are carried out in accordance with environmental legislation and regulations. All work is being done under the supervision of ecologists to ensure we meet our responsibilities with regard to animal protection.”
