A section of one of the busiest roads in Sussex was shut after a Ford Transit slammed into a barrier.
Emergency services were called to the M23, near Crawley, at about 4.30pm today.
Police originally claimed a people carrier containing several people was left on its side after it collided with the central reservation while travelling south.
However, officers had since said it was a Ford Transit travelling north.
The M23 was closed in both directions between Pease Pottage and Gatwick for a number of hours while the scene was examined and cleared.
A police spokesman advised motorists to avoid the area.
The incident took place near the junction with Copthorne and Pound Hill.
Witnesses reported the driver of the vehicle, which caused damaged over about 200 yards, received treatment from paramedics.
Officers said he was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton with serious injuries.
They added there is currently no information about any other casualties.
Anyone who saw what happened is asked to call Sussex Police on 101.
