A radical social centre is on high alert after right-wing extremists made a secret visit and posted threats online.

The North West Infidels (NWI), a far right group associated with the EDL, published pictures of the Cowley Club in Brighton on its Facebook page last week.

A message from the nationalist organisation claimed the photographs of the front and back of the building had been secretly taken by two members “on a scouting mission”.

The post ended by addressing the Cowley Club directly: “This is a message to you. We know who you are and we know where you are. We’ll be seeing you very soon.”

Earlier this month, an anarchist bookshop in Whitechapel, London, was torched by unknown arsonists – although there is no suggestion the attack was linked to the NWI.

The Cowley Club, a “collectively run libertarian social centre” in London Road, is used as a meeting place for radical left-wing movements from across the city.

On the internet, readers warned the club to take action to protect itself against any possible attack.

Message of hate

One said: “The Cowley should take immediate steps to make certain their premises are secure and that their fire protection, CCTV and insurance are up to covering a worst possible scenario.”

And a spokesman for Stop March For England, an anti-fascist group, said the online threats would not be taken lightly.

He said: “Threats like this should be taken very seriously, especially with the recent arson attack on the bookshop.

“Of course this is an online message so we should be careful not to overreact and give them what they want.

“But clearly the reason that the Cowley is being targeted is because Brighton has become quite emblematic of the struggle against these fascist groups.

“Their message of hate is drowned out here.”

Sussex Police could not confirm whether they were aware of any threat to the Cowley Club.
