Passenger dragged from taxi and attacked

A man was beaten up after getting into a taxi with a group of strangers.

The 28-year-old man from Newhaven was attacked by four other passengers in the early hours of Sunday 24 February.

Sometime between 3am and 4am the victim got into a Brighton and Hove taxi that was parked up at the taxi rank on West Street, outside the Odeon Cinema.

There were already four men inside the taxi which then drove along the coast road and stopped just before the Smugglers Rest pub on the A259 in Peacehaven.

It is alleged that the victim was then dragged from the taxi and assaulted by the four other passengers.

PC Carlie Franks from Lewes Neighbourhood Response Team said: "The victim received cuts and bruises but did not want to go to hospital for treatment.

"We are keen to speak to the taxi driver and any witnesses who may have driven past and witnessed the incident. You can call 101 quoting serial 0296 of 24/02 or leave an anonymous message with the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."

As this was an out of town taxi picking up in Brighton then it wouldnt be that difficult tracing the telephone number for the booking?

Many registered Brighton taxi drivers live out of town. Doesn't mean they are out of town taxis

It was a B&H taxi, therefore not out of town. The taxi was on a rank, therefore no booking required. Otherwise, well done.

the taxi driver must remember this incident, and if he/she doesn't come forward, could be implicated as an accomplice! this is an excellent reminder that CCTV should be fitted in all taxis

I read this piece of "news"
twice. Why? It is beyond me that,
1. The taxi driver did not call the Police or his dispatcher.
2. Did not stay at the scene of the crime, to help the victim.
3. Did nothing tangible to help the sorry soul that got beaten-up.

This all happened on early Sunday night & today is Wednesday & up until now nothing has happened. Someone somewhere is covering up for the driver.

An extremely sad state of affairs, especially as the Taxis are fitted with CCTV. What has the driver got to hide or is he afraid for his life?

It will make me think twice about getting into a Taxi late at night, when I next visit Brighton.

Unbelievable state of affairs, in fact incomprehensible.
