Thatched cottage destroyed by fire near Arundel

Over 50 firefighters tackled a blaze in a thatched cottage overnight.

Crews from across West Sussex attended the house fire in Wepham, near Arundel, from 7.30pm.

They spent the entire night tackling the blaze which soon spread to the thatched roof.

A fire service spokeswoman said that while investigators were yet to establish a cause, it is not thought to be deliberate.

She added that crews were dispatched from every station in the county except for Horley, describing it as a “major operation”.

As of 7.30am firefighters were still at the scene attempting to make the property safe.

Nobody is thought to be seriously injured.

More to come.
