Man dies after car crashes into ambulance in Roedean

A man has died and another is seriously injured after their car crashed into an ambulance which was responding to an emergency call.

The incident happened at 10:40pm last night (February 28) on Marine Drive near the Roedean pitch and putt golf course.

The 45-year-old driver of the Fiat Seicento died at the scene while his 43-year-old passenger was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital with serious injuries.

A member of the ambulance crew received slight injuries.

No patients were on board.

A spokesman for South East Coast Ambulance Service said: "We would like to offer our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased and our thoughts to all those involved.

“We will continue to work closely with Sussex Police as they investigate the causes of the road traffic collision.”

Anyone who witnessed the crash should contact police on 101 quoting operation Denmark.

Glad to see some idiot is more concerned with where it happened...Rather than the fact someone lost their life.

My condolences to to the family, and best wishes to all involved.

Our ambulances are doing a stirling job against the clock and many lives are saved through their good work. However, with the new bus lanes in theory, it should be making their path clearer, but tragically something went badly wrong in this case.
Living adjacent to the A259 ambulances are constantly whizzing by often sirens going and lights flashing at all times of day and night and inevitably with the sheer volume of ambulance movement there is potential for accidents to happen. Most drivers will sensibly move over where safe but others will be slow to respond or panick and manueovre inappropriately. Perhaps the driving test should incorporate more emphasis and training on how to react safely with emergency response vehicles. Of course how it happened is not yet known. My heart goes out to both parties and their families and friends.

The ambulance service and A&Es are at crisis point.
I know first hand that yesterday evening, prior to this RTC, there was a lengthy period where NO ambulances were available AT ALL in Sussex.

Ambulances were stacked up at the RSCH because there were not enough staff to receive the patients on board.
One of their ambulances, still in service, has over 360k (!) on the clock.

Whatever happened last night is tragic and my heart goes out to the poor man who died and the one who was injured.

I feel also for the ambulance driver who certainly did not leave home last night intending to hurt anyone, and who is working against an appalling backdrop of pressures - only some of which are noted above.

I would also add that where the accident happened there is not a bus lane, but the road does change from two lanes to one and it is in a 50mph zone.
I also agree that something could be incorporated in driver training as I often see drivers doing the most stupid things when confronted with the emergency services on a call!
My condolences to all concerned at your sad loss.

In their defense, the Headline this morning DID say Rottingdean.
The Argus have now corrected it.

Why is it reported in the argus as 'car crashes into ambulance' when nationally it is said there was a collision?

Maybe amboguy can prove his worth and enlighten us further?

Concerned too for family but at an early stage in the reporting I decided to comment on the location instead as this may have confused interested parties. Don't know why that is idiotic.

It Matters not one bit where the exact spot of this terrible accident took place. What matters is that a human being lost their life, one is injured and a number of others will have a very long road to recovery coming to terms with what they saw and with what has happened. Lets not lay blame. Lets not judge. Lets not shame. A family has had a loved one taken from them, So, man up people, grow some balls, stop being pathetic and immature in trying to nit pick.
RIP Sir and, may recovery come quickly to the other people involved, both physically and emotionally
