Portas Project gives £10k

Two seaside towns are drawing up plans for improvements to their high street after receiving Government funding.

Bognor Regis and Littlehampton were unsuccessful in their bids to the Government’s Portas Pilot Scheme but have received a £10,000 Portas Project starter fund instead.

Arun District Council and the University of Chichester are working with Bognor Regis Town Council and local businesses to find ways to improve retail facilities and public spaces.

The district council is working with traders and the town council to decide on how to best use the money, which could be added to by planning agreements with developers.

Meanwhile in other papers today local traders where the scheme has provided money are declaring it a complete disaster.

In all the talk about how to improve the high street so far I have not heard anyone say that good shop front design would greatly help.

It is sometimes said that the art people choose provides a window on their soul and the standard of shop front design points to the relatively dismal state of the British soul.

If there was more focus on art and design in school with drawing a regular habit this might seep through to the quality of the built environment one day and Britain might regain its genius for architecture we so much admire in old buildings.

Get drawing today! All of you.

I Don't think the previous commenters realised this was a comedy article.

Ten Grand should do it. Booking my ticket now to travel to the new utopia and ultimate shopping experiences of the south coast. Must get a reserved seat on the train.

So what does 10 grand get you these days, to promote a whole town centre? Sounds ripe for a scam to me.

"The district council is working with traders and the town council to decide on how to best use the money" After subtracting the cost of this 'working' how much of the ten grand will be left to invest? There will probably be enough for a couple of litter bins and that'll be it.

This just goes to show the lack of commitment of this government to towns and cities. Don't worry, planning restrictions have been lifted on supermarkets out of town,

Lol. People go to supermarkets because it's easy and convenient. They can take their cars because they don't want to use public transport. The success of the supermarkets shows how out of touch with ordinary people parties like the Greens are.

If High Streets want to survive they need a fundamental change. They will have to become a destination or niche if they want to survive. Governments can't force people to shop anywhere, unless they are repressive dictatorships.
