Council acts to halt car parking on verges

A council has been taking steps to tackle problem parking in a town.

A successful pilot exercise has been carried out with St Francis School in Southgate, Crawley, where the local council has been able to help the school’s 'Safer Pavements' campaign.

Fencing has been installed around some of the verges closest to the school.

These verges were regularly being used for parking during the school run, putting pedestrians and road users at risk.

Councillor Ken Trussell said: “Residents across the town have given us a long list where they feel parking on verges is a real problem.

“Where residents are keen to work with the council in improving their environment, we are looking forward to working with them to find the best solution.

"We are also lobbying for a more flexible enforcement regime, which would result in fixed penalty notices.”

Too late for my Brighton street. The verges are now like ploughed fields, but I'm sure the council will still send the mower round.

Low level anti-social behaviour such as verge parking will not stop until we as a community decide we will not tolerate it any more.

These are our streets and we should take some responsibility for the behaviour we tolerate on our streets. As long as we all depend on Authorities, such as parking reinforcement or the council, to address the issue for us it will remain an issue.

In brighton the level of car ownership is too high given the parking space available. Only solution is to reduce car ownership or provide more parking space. How exactly do we as residents enforce parking restrictions?

Parents need to get their kids to school - a shame the council want to make it harder instead of easier...

Well it what they voted for, so tough I guess.

Parking on verges is done because people can do it and get away with it. The reason they get away with it is because we all tend to think it is someone elses' job to stop it from happening.

I agree that all things considered I’d rather have nice unspoiled verges but is it really that bad when they get churned up and muddy – it’s just grass

It leaves more space on the roads and makes them safer and more usable

Surely we’ve got bigger fish to fry than this

Car ownership in Brighton is very low compared to the rest of the South East, and 7th lowest in England and Wales, this is FACT!!!!!!!!!!!!

See this extract from Brighton Councils website released last month:

"Press release Thursday, 14 February 2013

City stats show move to sustainable travel

Over a third of households do not own a car in Brighton & Hove, according to the latest census figures.

Car ownership is the lowest (per household) in the South East and the seventh lowest in England and Wales. Fewer than 20% of households now own more than one car, compared to 40% in the South East and 32% in England and Wales."

I am all for people not using cars where possible, but more parking should be provided, not demonising car owners when they have to park where they would no doubt prefer a parking space rather than a muddy verge.

Not everyone works within walking distance or can access cheap, reliable and quick public transport, not counting the thousands of tradesmen within Brighton who need transport for work purposes.

Get the fat lardy ar*ed mums out of their 4x4's dropping off Tarquin and Henrietta at school, that would be an excellent start!

Oh, and I own a car, park properly, and only ever use mine for work, or out of town shopping, I walk everywhere else.

It is somebody else's job. I have no legal powers to stop it. Of course, you can "report" it, but be prepared to spend a lot of time for little action. Take a look at the parking on verges around varndean college........

As a single individual you certainly have no power. However as a community we have.

We all know who the regular verge parkers in our roads are. We also have a fair idea of what time of day they are likely to park on the verges. Get a group of neighbours who all object to the verge parking and arrange to stand around on the verges having a chat ... they won't park there when you are standing on the verge.

It doesn't always have to be a fine or a letter from the headmaster ... sometimes something as simple as community action can solve a recurring problem. All it needs is commitment, a bit of imagination and a community to stand together.

They could start by banning parking on the central verge in Surrenden Road, especially when there are events like Pride in Preston Park.
