Elm still standing despite Brighton council's Seven Dials revamp starting

TREE: Messages of support have been attached to the elem in Vernon Terrace, Hove. TREE: Messages of support have been attached to the elem in Vernon Terrace, Hove.

A historic elm remains standing after workmen moved in to revamp a controversial roundabout.

Contractors from Brighton and Hove City Council began its £1.5 million scheme to improve the Seven Dials junction yesterday.

Campaigners gathered around a tree in Vernon Terrace, Hove, for a number of hours in an attempt to stop it being felled.

Messages of support, such as “I’m a lean green oxygen making machine” have also been stapled to the trunk.

It comes as council leader Jason Kitcat claimed the tree, which is causing damage to the pavement and highway, may have been saved if residents approved the original scheme.

Campaigner Mill Ferguson, of Addison Road, Hove, described the move as “cynical”.

She added residents were due to return to the tree today and continue their vigil.

In a letter to residents, council leader Jason Kitcat said: “It is very sad that this tree has to go.

“We did consult on an option of narrowing the carriageway at that point of Vernon Terrace, to make it a one-way junction with the roundabout, but this was very strongly rejected by the local community.

“There might have been an outside chance that this narrowing would have allowed for retention, but that was not the approach supported by the consultation responses.”

Coun Kitcat added the local authority only removed a tree if absolutely necessary.

Work on the busy junction is set to continue for nine months.

Here we go it's our fault we didn't let them have their own way in narrowing the road and making it one way So pay back We did not agree so we must be punished!! Typical of their only role model authority figure their primary school teachers Detention then? Yes 9 months of misery on a scheme that should take 6 weeks max and they chop down an old and rare tree.
Same bunch are over in Bexhill camping out delaying a needed road scheme lawfully and extensively consulted on while here they block the roads.
Davey/Follett and Kitkat GO NOW and take West with you

Nah ... he didn't say it would have been saved had we agreed the original scheme. He said it may have been saved ... I saw through that school marmy rhetoric when I was three and it still fails to impress me.

If this magnificent, majestic tree is to be felled, and the local community would allow me. I would like to recycle the timber, rather than the council take it to the furnace. And make a bench to sit in the park behind.

Ha, the hypocrisy of the Argus comments area. If common sense meant knocking the tree down and the Green council tried to prevent it all the negative people here would still be having a go at them.

They'd be calling them lefty commie tree-hungers for trying to preserve the tree and making that road only one way. Ha.

True - they're under threat, but the Greens don't care about them. They appear ideologically opposed to trees. Look all around the city and felling is taking place.

Their supporters are out again with their chainsaws, adding to the numbers of elm, ash and other trees already cut down in Wild Park. They are intent on destroying the woodland, displacing nesting birds illegally, and fencing the land to create a sheep farm. They completely ignore the fact that over 1770 people signed a petition opposing further destruction.

I think trees represent a permanence in the landscape that this scientifically ignorant, urban, self-absorbed group will never have, and this is why they despise them. They're eco-vandals who deserve to be shown up for their total hypocrisy.

It's not just a tree, Brighton and Hove have virtually the only mature elms left in Britain, maybe in Europe. We lose a few to disease every year (sadly the ones by the tea rooms in Stanmer Park have now gone), so wait a few years and this one will inevitably go as well as the disease will win eventually.

IF I thought that by losing the tree we could have a scheme to enable traffic (yes cars) to move more freely to enable people to travel better then I might agree to losing it a few years before it's time. But I don't think that's going to be the case.

@ Fercri Sakes: My young daughter and I pass this tree twice a day going to and from school. It doesn't get in our way. We love it.

Trees aren't just nature's lamp posts. They play a vital role in producing oxygen for us to breathe.

We breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide and then what happens....? The trees take in the carbon dioxide we produce and replace it with fresh oxygen.

Cut all the trees down and what happens then?

Plenty of room to walk past the tree. Cutting it down doesn't benefit anybody. The area needs more trees not less. There is just no excuse or need to chop it down, it could have another 200 years life left in it yet.

Brighton is home to the National Elm collection.

Journalist Mark Seddon once wrote that Brighton should be campaigning for UNESCO World Heritage status on the basis of our collection of Elms. But what are we doing? Cutting them down for some road scheme that will probably be abandoned or revamped long before the trees would naturally come to an end.

Come on people - these ancient trees are rare and precious. Let's treasure them - not chop them down.

You don't have to be psychic. Just take a look at the Nevill Road/Old Shoreham road junction. Queues now back right up to the Co-op and block the roundabout at the Greyhound Stadium/Co-op exit. That was just a change of lane markings.

Fair comment. At the end of the day it's not one of the great elms like we have at the Level or Preston Park and I totally accept that occasionally trees have to be cut down for road improvements. I guess I wouldn't be opposed to its removal IF I had sufficient faith in the effectiveness of the scheme. As it is I think we're going to lose a rare tree for nothing.

Not such a "bog standard" education, actually, for Ed.
"Between 1978 and 1981, Ed Miliband attended Primrose Hill Primary School in Camden and then Haverstock Comprehensive School in Chalk Farm. After completing his O-levels, he worked as an intern to family friend Tony Benn, the MP for Chesterfield.
In 1989, Miliband entered Corpus Christi College, Oxford to read Philosophy, Politics and Economics."
