Fire crews were called to a fire on a bus near Pyecombe this morning (March 6).

Crews from east and west Sussex were called to the fire on the A273 just after 9am.

Three passengers managed to escape when the fire broke out in the engine as the bus travelled north.

The Sussex Bus single-deck vehicle caught alight just after the slip road off of the A23.

The road was blocked for about 45 minutes, leaving traffic queuing back in both directions.

I drove past it earlier and all I could see was steam. I just went past again on way back home and the bus looked fine, just parked at the side of the road.

Isn't this the same company who had a bus load of children removed from a bus in January? http://www.theargus.

I use that road daily and it's a nightmare! Buses regularly break down there and trees are prone to come down in heavy winds. A pensioner sadly passed away after a recent accident.

I was on a Red Sussex Bus on Monday that broke down, the Suusex Bus company seem very unreliable.

Their buses certainly leave a lot to be desired. Bone shakers every one of them ...

Two engine area fires in such a short period of time raises the question of maintainance. About time for a visit from VOSA & the Traffic Commissioners in the very near future.

I have used their services along with Metrobus, Brighton&Hove and Compass and cant really see a difference - whatever name is on the side of the bus it is still stuck on the same pot hole covered roads as everyone else so it will never feel like a Rolls Royce. Countryliner upset everyone towards the end myself included with their shoddy service if it turned up at all but I think that theSussexBus are taking the blame for things that are not really their fault. Next they will have a tyre blow out and it will be reported as some kind of terrorist attack!

Does anyone else yearn for the good old days when buses (and other vehicles) used to catch fire, rather than catch ON fire?

Just because they took over the Countryliner routes? Fact is that was a few months ago. 9th October 2012 to be precise. The company had previously run buses and coaches. They should have known what was involved when they took over those routes.

Better than catching off fire I guess.

I go from Hove to Burgess Hill every morning early. When Countryliner ran the route, there was an almost empty 40 before 7 am, followed by a slightly more full 40x just after. Since Countryliner went down the tubes, the 40 and 40x still run, but have been joined by a 273 that appears at about the same time as the 40, so whichever bus turns up first gets the few passengers, with the other following behind, empty. You would think the bus companies would twig to this and cooperate, or do they want to go bust?

As referred to by others above, something either 'catches fire' or is 'on fire'. Basic English!

yup, they are mostly quite old and tatty really, unlike Brighton and Hove's shiny new buses. And the Green's in Brighton wonder why we all have cars where there isnt a good bus service!!

Why would you report there was a fire when there was not one, don't just make it up,the picture shows white steam not black smoke, the steam was made as the fire service hit the overheated engine.

If in doubt make it up !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Indeed but when did the modern journalist require good English as an entry standard?
Sadly it is just like saying accountants need to be good at maths, lawyers keep the law, police uphold the rule of law, etc.
Sic transit gloria mundi!
