"All lines are now open but there will still be disruption as trains and crews are out of place, so there will be short notice alterations, some cancellations and delays of up to 40 minutes as the service recovers.

For slightly longer term, the Met Office say the county is not due for any more snow this week after today. They say it is to early to say whether we will have a white Easter, which has been reported by some forecasting services, but that we should expect lower than average temperatures over the next fortnight.

10:28am

Latest from Met Office: Sussex will see snow showers throughout the day with up to 5cm in places. The snow will then move south from about midnight. Tomorrow will be generally dry and bright but only 4C so likely snow will stick around in the morning.

ROADS - SUSSEX POLICE WARNING

Sussex Police has just issued the folllowing statement:

Police across Sussex are warning drivers to make allowances for the return of the wintry weather as road policing units have been called to a number of crashes caused by the snowy conditions.

A police spokesman said: "There's not a great deal of snow falling at the moment, but the temperature is hovering at or just below freezing and the roads are slippery in places. Some drivers are just not making allowances for the conditions.

"In icy conditions it will take a lot longer to bring your vehicle to a stop.

"Allow greater stopping distances between you and the vehicle in front - at least ten times the normal distance - and keep your speed appropriate to the conditions.

"Keep your driving smooth, avoid sudden turning, braking or acceleration. Areas under trees, in shadow and on bridges tend to remain colder for longer so beware that there may still be ice patches even if the rest of the road is clear.

"Before setting off drivers should make sure that mirrors and all windows and lights are clear from ice, frost or condensation. On cold mornings it is all too easy to jump in your car and drive off, but it is important that you have a good view of the road all around you from the start.

"Spring may be just around the corner, but while it may be warm and cosy inside your car, it's cold, icy and potentially very hazardous outside it. Please think!"

LATEST FORECAST

James Wilby, forecaster for Meteogroup, said: "One band of snow will move in from the south west spreading east along the coast and southern regions to Kent and moving as far north as the M4 corridor.

"There will be a build up of up to 4cms most areas, and up to 10cms in the worst hit - London will also see a few cms in some places.

"This snow will continue overnight and begin easing on Tuesday morning, and will be accompanied with strong gusts of wind."

"There will be a pattern of snow falling and the sun coming out to melt it, before more snow falls and is melted again.

"But in all areas the snow will sporadic, areas only ten miles apart will see big differences from heavy snow fall to no snow fall."

7:49am

Sussex has woken to a small sprinkling of snow this morning - with forecasters expecting it to get worse.

Significant snowfall is expected to cause disruption throughout today and tomorrow as the possibility of a white Easter looms.

The southern counties of England are expected to take the brunt of heavy repeated snow showers moving in from the south west.

Up to 10cms (3.9 inches) will settle in the worst affected areas, including Sussex and southern Hampshire, while large areas could see around up to 4cm accumulate.

People who do nothing but comment on grammer and spelling need to get out more and get a life and stop trying to control other people - there ARE more important things to comment on such as people suffering in the UK, like pensioners freezing to death in their homes because they cannot afford to pay their bills, this government has made this situation worse and remember it was the Tories that sold off the gas and elec' companies to their friends in high places and who had made enough in donations to the Tory (Nazi) party.

Just after 5pm I tried to drive along the A259 in eastern Peacehaven and got about 500 yards. I've been driving for many years but have never been so nervous in my life. It's just a covering of snow but the road is a sheet of ice. Virtually impossible to get any traction even at very slow speeds. DO NOT ATTEMPT IT! IT'S NOT THE SNOW THAT'S THE PROBLEM BUT THE ICE.

Lack of gritting aside most of this mayhem is caused by by idiot impatient drivers that still don't possess enough braincells to adjust their driving for the weather. It may take 5 times longer it is still possible to get from a to b in this weather. Came home before the mayhem started in earnest and still observed some idiot leaving the westbound hove slip too fast and spinning 180 degrees ending up on the grass bank. Couple of miles later at entrance to south wick tunnel some dick had spun and hit the central reservation ending up on the grass verge with the front of their car stoved in. Slow down!

couldnt believe that the local council.s have not been out and gritted the A27 or had ploughs driving up and down the road clearing the snow away. cars were sliding all over the place and accidents happing up and down it, if the council had got out and done what they should have traffic would have moved much more easy, was not like they were not warned it was going to snow, they had plenty of warning questions should be asked why the council did not react in time

It's not just Brighton as the A23 was a complete nightmare at 5pm tonight. No sight of grit whatsoever. After the chaos this morning, anyone involved in an accident tonight should direct their claim to the relevant authority. This is blatant disregard for people's lives. The bad weather was fully advertised and no action was taken. After the shambles a few weeks ago, it seems that no lessons have been learnt.

Gritters were out all day, the grit doesn't last long as it gets washed away with the snow/ice it has melted. Council's have done what they can but they only have so many gritters (Which are not cheap) and can't continue to grit 1 road constantly. Buying more gritters for such occasions is a waste of money as it would only be needed a few times in a year (Unlike in other countries where they see alot of snow and have the gritters to show).

footballstar says...
9:05pm Mon 11 Mar 13

just because the grit may have been washed away, why were snow ploughs not used to clear the snow, they were out with the last snow fall but i did not see one from hailsham to worthing, they should have been doing their best to clear the A23 and A27 which seem to be two of the most busy roads in sussex

Now go and learn some proper spelling and grammar.
Angry and a bad speller. Ouch!

What tosh, grit doesn't just "wash away" leaving no trace.

Snow ploughs wouldn't help much in this weather as the main problem is actually the ice below the snow which the ploughs can do nothing about.

Grit leaves a colour in the snow. As far as I am aware, grit and rock salt is not white! No sign of grit on many major roads.

Got to say that in 20 years of driving, tonight in Brighton & Hove were the worst conditions i've encountered and the main reason has been ungritted roads.
Was like looking into the future driving along Church Road, Hove about an hour ago with all the cars driving at around 20mph, would have felt ridiculous doing that speed had the conditions been normal though!...but on a serious note that was one of the better roads and any road with the slightest hill was just an accident waiting to happen, in which I saw a few little dings and locked up quite a few times myself...like a few of the other posts I agree that heads need to roll...starting at the top!

That is because if lessons were learnt first time around, they would have no lessons to learn next time they foul up!

It has just taken me 2 hours to get home to Portslade from Kemp town.
I thought the obvious route was the seafront but it was dreadful. Worst driving experience I've ever had, and I'm truly thankful that I'm here in one piece and didn't smash up the car despite loosing it several times. Didn't see one gritter. The council should have seen this coming. It was forecast for the last few days..

I'm not saying that gritting has been going on everywhere, but the A23, A27 and other major routes are the responsibility of the Highways Agency team, WSCC/BHCC/ESCC gritters are responsible for local routes. If you follow each of their twitter feeds, the main problem is getting the gritters through the traffic...

I’m echoing the opinion of many others here:
Where the hell were the gritters and/or snow-brushes/ploughs
?!
Left for an M4 corridor meeting at 12:30 this afternoon, it was clear that none of the roads had been treated but the journey wasn't too bad.
Returned home at 18:30 this evening, still none of the roads had been treated, not even the A23!
The whole city was totally gridlocked and many of the vehicles that were actually moving, weren't under the control of their drivers.
This weather was no surprise; everyone knew it was coming.
Shame on you BHCC!
I hope those who have suffered injury or damage to property as a result of your negligence claim damages from you and that you learn from this lesson, sack those responsible and make adequate preparation for future weather events like this.

WHERE IS THE GRIT, SORRY WHERE WAS THE GRIT? Yes I'm shouting, but will they ever ever ever learn? But in a few days time we'll all forget about it won't we? Get on to your local councilor now please, otherwise you'll be stuck again in one inch of snow next time (with plenty of warning!)

Thanks to the police and other services for towing me and others up the mild incline of the a23 southbound at pyecombe this evening.

It was and still is sheet ice, nightmare.
It appears the salt and grit were blown off the road surface by the strong winds.

There was plenty of warning through the forecast, grit should have been laid well before. There is absolutely NO excuse.

Five hours to get to Saltdean from the marina! The only section of the A259 to have been gritted was the hill from Rottingdean to Saltdean - the rest of it was chaos. Do we assume that BHCC think the 259 is not a major road?

Drivers should use chains around the tyres like in countries where it's snow every year. It's the ONLY safe way to drive with snow and ice!!

No it's not. There isn't enough snow here to use chains. You need a good layer of compacted snow for the duration of your journey. Not the slippery and relatively thin layer we have here at the moment.

Grit is what is needed. The council didn't bother since they are trying to get us all used to driving at 10 MPH when the new speed limit comes in to effect.

No excuse for what?! They knew the forecast, they acted. Gritters have been out today since 1pm and were out last night too and all weekend. The roads were well gritted but it got washed away.

Well last lot of snow I saw plenty of evidence of he salters out on the streets - plenty on the ground and even saw the vehicles a few times.

Today? Nothing. Nothing on the ground, no vehicles. It's like they haven't been out - but they must have been. The council says so. So one questions: where have they been?

Also, the commenter above suggests they've been out since 1pm today. This begs the question: why so late? There was snow at 7:30am when I got up and it continued all day, even though it didn't settle until later. Why weren't there salters out on the roads from 7am this morning all day? That surely would have meant much more salt could be on the roads before things got really bad this afternoon. There was definitely plenty of warning of this snow to prepare for this.

Avoid travelling in this weather!

My mate is STILL driving back to Brighton from London, set off at 7:30pm and it's now nearly 1am!!!!!

Stuck since 9:30pm in stationary traffic at Crawley/Pease Pottage and the motorway is closed for improvements when people are trying to get home! How ridiculous!!!!!

Wouldn't it be nice if this Green council spent more money on gritting the streets than they do on painting those silly 20mph signs.

You are stupid.
The gritters have been out as usual- the fierce wind has blown it away as there is no water for it to bind to the road- it all frozen ice.
It's the same outside of Brighton where it's not the local council responsibility - I was towed off the a23 earlier.

Once the queues build up its then impossible for the lorries to further grit the roads and with the depth of that hard packed snow, useless.

Useless. Just like your silly comment.

Think the point is Graham is that if action was taken when it should have been, we wouldn't have got to the point where we are now, there wouldn't have been the quantity of ice that there is now, much of it would have been wet and salty and the grit would have been able to settle and not blow away. We've been here before, many times, but never been blessed with the incompetence that we are currently faced with! It's not the lads working hard to grit, it's the overpaid over qualified twits without an ounce of common sense between them allegedly 'directing' operations!
Quoting 'mims' from earlier in this thread - "That is because if lessons were learnt first time around, they would have no lessons to learn next time they foul up!" It's what happens when you replace 'good ol' boys' who had experience and replace them with kids in suits who have none!
