Meeting to save Vernon Terrace elm tree

Tree campaigners will hold a public meeting to try to save a historic elm from the chop.

Brighton and Hove City Council planned to fell the tree in Vernon Terrace as part of a wider plan to revamp the Seven Dials roundabout.

However, after two protesters camped up the tree last week and hundreds of people signed a petition against the move, the local authority granted a temporary reprieve.

Council bosses added they are welcome to hearing any ideas on how to save the tree.

A public meeting will be held at BHASVIC in Dyke Road, Hove, tonight at 7.30pm.

"Our previous venue (Bhasvic) cancelled us due to the snow. The new venue is West Hill Community Hall, Compton Avenue, Brighton, East Sussex, BN1 3PS."

Apparently a bus service will be running to take people to the new venue from Bhasvic.

Would have thought a small taxi would be adequate...can't see more than a couple of people going along!

Why not just chop it down, make the road safe and plant a new tree in a safer area! Pointless having a public meeting when you can be home by a nice log fire watching the footie!

Exactly, but ideally the wood needs to season before we burn it!

Typical narrow-minded, selfish, middle class idealists.

"Lets save the poor tree, never mind the MAJOR disruption it will cause everyone - we dont care, we're rich enough to get taxis/ Lib dem enough to cycle everywhere"

Nutters. Spend HALF the energy you put into this rubbish into volunteering to help homeless people and you'd save REAL LIVES. But we can see where your priorities lie..

Enough people turned out to fill more than a dozen taxis and on such a freezing night.
Shame the Argus posted the wrong venue so long after it had been changed.
The correct details went up earlier on Brighton and Hove News.
Let's see now how green the Greens really are.

I'm afraid we weren't contacted with the change of venue information.

This story appeared in The Argus in print on Tuesday morning. Stories are timed to go live throughout the day. If we had been informed then it would have been changed.

Suggest if these people put half their energy into running the homeless street drinkers out of town, Brighton surely would be a much better place!
