Kai Mohammed-Grange, Deputy Youth Parliament Member for Brighton and Hove
A Hove Park student has taken his first step towards the House of Commons after being elected to represent Brighton and Hove by the council.
Kai Mohammed-Grange in Year 9 has been elected a Deputy Youth Parliament Member representing his home constituency, Brighton and Hove.
He was voted in by members of the Brighton and Hove Youth Council, who were impressed with his campaign and pledges to improve the lives of young people in the region.
Kai will spend one year as a deputy member before being promoted to a full Youth Parliament Member next year.
In his role he will be expected to find out the concerns and needs of other young people in the constituency, and represent those views to decision makers on a local, regional and national level.
He will also develop a close working relationship with our local MP and often have meetings at the House of Commons and in the constituency.
Political future
When asked if he fancies a future in politics, Kai said: “I may go into politics. I haven’t chosen my options yet but it is a possible direction, yes.
“I’m mainly just really excited and honoured to have been given this opportunity. And of course my parents are very happy and proud.
“The aims of the Youth Parliament are based on Article 12 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child which pledges to give young people a voice and to ensure that that voice is heard and respected.”
'Great communicator'
Kai’s head of year Mrs Lesley Ruggles said: “Kai is a diligent student and a valued member of the School Community.
“He is a great communicator and is at all times appropriate when sharing his opinions with diligence, empathy and represents his fellow students conscientiously.
“Kai gives his best in his studies and has passed his Hove Park Bacc with Honours.
“It is a pleasure to have him in Year 9.”
