Kitcat set to retain Brighton and Hove Green leader post uncontested
4:50pm Tuesday 19th March 2013 in News
Brighton and Hove City Council leader Jason Kitcat
A council leader is facing no opposition in his bid to get re-elected.
Jason Kitcat is the only declared candidate in the Green Party’s annual election to be convenor of its Brighton and Hove City Council group of councillors.
It means Coun Kitcat, who was elected leader of the council nearly a year ago, is likely to continue in the role for another 12 months.
However, those voting will also have the opportunity to vote for Ron – to re-open nominations.
The same election, which will take place in the coming days, will see the election of two deputy convenors.
Members of the Brighton and Hove Green Party and councillors will be invited to cast their votes.
There are no details released officially on who is standing for deputy leader, although Ian Davey and Lizzie Deane are believed to have put themselves forward.
Voting closes on Saturday (March 23) with the results announced a few days after that.

The Greens would be wise to retain Jason who is the least extremist of the Greens, the least obviously working to a personal hobby horse agenda and someone with huge energy and bomb-proof optimism. He has a clear overviewers grasp of what the officers do and a managerial mindset - it seems to me, at any rate.
The Conservatives fortunes declined when they began and continued to play musical chairs with their leadership. Garry Peltzer Dunn, then Brian Oxley, then GPD then BO and on to Mary Mears followed by Geoffrey Theobald. A sense of parties being in leadership disarray does not help them at the ballot box.
The Greens need to rein back the lobbyists with purely activist agendas just hitching a ride on the role of Councillor in order to gain a platform from which to promote personal agendas.
They have a city to run....and its a boring old bit of management, needing attention to detail more than political gamesmanship. They need to get more of a grip on their briefs so they are better able to call officers to account. This is a problem in all administrations alas. But in this one, officers embarrass councillors too often and more than one or two need their wings clipping.
Hard pruned more like.

"The Greens would be wise to retain Jason who is the least extremist of the Greens, the least obviously working to a personal hobby horse agenda...."
Replace "least extremist" with "most right wing" and "the least obviously working to a personal hobby horse agenda" with " a careerist, without any real convictions at all" and this comment makes a lot more sense.
The problem for the Greens (and us), is that Jason could be quite at home in any of the current Parties.

"I'm sure someone will think this makes sense" Quit jumping on various bandwagons, using arbitrary insults and back your claims up with researched evidence.

Why is there a preference in some Green Party quarters for dramatic personalities striking soapbox poses? Greens with red centres - so red as to be viciously feral. Greens who only care about an intolerant LGBT agenda (and I'm thinking of what was done to Christina Summers here). Greens who care more about kowtowing to officers wanting to cut down trees than providing GREEN policy that looks after them as they used to be looked after before the word 'green' became a political description. it goes on....alas.
The general public with a green-minded bent voted the Greens to power such that they were able to form an administration. That same public are now bewildered to see such a mishmash of identities jostling for the Most Right-on extreme PC Councillor of the Decade award.
That self-destruct button is not preferable to what Jason represents. He is green enough for most voters and able to hoover in confidence from people used to voting red, blue and yellow who hanker after a more greenly managed sustainable world.
Some green councillors should stop hiding behind the Green label and consider starting their own political party as it might help prevent the loss of the Green Party if they did.
