Firefighters families await compensation battle result

The families of two firemen killed in a fireworks blast are waiting to hear whether they have won their battle for compensation.

Geoff Wicker and Brian Wembridge died in an explosion at Marlie Farm, near Lewes, six years ago.

A three week trial of the case against East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service and Martin Winter, the owner of the fireworks firm, began on February 25.

The case has now concluded and the judge is expected to give his judgement in six weeks.

It's bad enough to have a loved one die but to have to go through all this as well must be taking it's toll on the poor families involved.

It shouldn't have had to go to court - people should admit to mistakes made and compensation should have been paid without having to go to all the added expense of lawyers, who will cost a small fortune and the added trauma.

Why so many claims end in court is quite wrong in this day and age. The added stress for people is terrible.

It is not well known but the fire brigades union will sue the owner of any property involved in a fire or incident where a firefighter is injured.
