Controversial comedian Frankie Boyle is known for his stinging attacks on politicians, celebrities and athletes.

But the 40-year-old has shown his softer side this week – after he bought dinner for student protesters.

The funny-man, who studied English Literature at the University of Sussex, phoned campaigners on Wednesday morning to pledge his support.

Although currently tied up in his native Scotland, he told them he wanted to help in whatever way he could.

That evening he jumped on the internet and ordered a mass of pizzas from a nearby Pizza Hut.

Protester Michael Segelov said: “There were so many – it was really nice of him.

‘It means a lot’ “He said that he had family commitments up in Scotland but wanted to help out. It means a lot.”

Students have occupied the top floor of the university’s Bramber Building since February 7.

They are protesting against the outsourcing of 235 campus jobs to external contractors.

Their campaign has grown over the six weeks, attracting support from academics, students and celebrities.

Among the other well known faces are legendary director Ken Loach, Bafta-winning actor Peter Capaldi and writer Noam Chomsky.

The protesters have vowed to occupy the top floor conference centre until university bosses reverse its plans.

Frankie Boyle was unavailable for comment yesterday.

Monday will see a demonstration against privatisation held at the Falmer Campus.

Transport is being put on from around the UK, with 1,000 students said to be attending.
