Campaigners have won the latest round in a court battle to reopen a sandy beach.

A judge in the High Court today (March 27) backed Newhaven Town Council in its fight to re-open the West Beach by giving it village green status, which would force the town’s port to allow public access.

The beach was closed by owner Newhaven Port and Properties in 2008 amid concerns for public safety.

Crumbling walls on the beach were a health and safety risk and there were also concerns about big waves washing on to the shoreline when ships passed by.

Today’s decision may still be appealed by Newhaven Port’s French owners – but for now campaigners are celebrating.

Councillor Carla Butler said: “This is a victory for people power.

“Thousands of local people have supported us through this and I’m sure they will all be overjoyed.”
