Hundreds of people took part in a protest today against Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust’s plans to cut its budget by £30 million.

The Defend Our NHS protest, supported by the GMB union, started outside the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Eastern Road, Brighton, before making its way to Victoria Gardens.

Speakers included Brighton Pavilion MP Caroline Lucas, Labour peer Lord Bassam and GMB regional secretary Paul Maloney.

New trust chief executive Matthew Kershaw told The Argus last month that redundancies could not be ruled out as bosses work to find the savings.

All NHS organisations are required by the Government to make around 4% of efficiency savings each year.

Protesters included members of the public and former patients as well as campaigners and union officials.
