Two Sussex-based musicians have been named the richest in the UK.

Sir Paul McCartney and Adele head the list for wealthiest music millionaires and the list of young music millionaires respectively in the annual Sunday Times Rich List.

Sir Paul, 70, who lives at Pesemarsh, near Rye, shares his £680 million fortune with his wife Nancy Shevell.

His wealth has risen by £15m compared with the £665m reported in the 2012 list.

A Rich List spokesman said: “Sir Paul has topped all the charts for the country's wealthiest musicians since the Sunday Times Rich List began in 1989, when the former Beatle was worth £80m.

“By 1993, the McCartney fortune had grown to £400m.

“Aside from starring roles at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and closing the opening ceremony for the London Olympics, Sir Paul’s On the Run tour grossed 57m dollars from 18 dates in 2012.”

The figure also includes Nancy Shevell’s £150m stake in her father’s freight trucking company.

Adele, 24, who lives at the Western Esplanade in Hove with her boyfriend Simon Konecki, has an estimated £30m fortune.

She is placed at number one in the list of the 15 wealthiest music millionaires aged 30 and under.

Her wealth has risen by £10m from the £20m reported in 2012.

Her impressive live performance of the Oscar-winning Skyfall at this year’s ceremony helped to boost sales of her second album 21, despite the song not featuring on it.

Other Sussex stars featuring on the list include Rolling Stone Keith Richards, who lives near Chichester.

He has a fortune of £185m compared to £175m last year.

Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour, who lives in Medina Terrace, Hove, is said to be worth £85m, the same as last year.

The Rich List, published later this month, profiles the 1,000 richest people and families in the UK.

It is based on identifiable wealth, including land, property and other assets such as art and racehorses.
