Hundreds of heroes go almost unnoticed in our local communities.
But The Argus is determined to give them the recognition they so thoroughly deserve.

We have teamed up with housing repair and maintenance company Mears to launch our weekly Local Heroes Award.

We are inviting readers to nominate their candidates and tell us why they have put them forward for the award.

It could be for an overwhelming commitment to a worthy cause, a heroic act which showcased a person’s selflessness and bravery or someone who regularly goes the extra mile, thinking only of others.

All the nominees will then be judged by Gary Lester, managing director of Mears and Michael Beard, editor of The Argus.

Every Saturday we will feature that week’s winner, who will receive champagne and chocolates or a £30 Amazon book or gift voucher as well as an Argus front page certificate.

Each featured winner will also be automatically entered into the local hero category of the prestigious Argus Achievement Awards, with the chance to win dinner for a family of four and tickets for a show at the Theatre Royal.

The winner will be chosen in a public vote through the newspaper and its website www.theargus.co.uk and announced at the annual awards being held this October.

Argus Editor Michael said: “The Argus Achievement Awards already recognise the relentless commitment of the stalwarts in our communities. But those awards are held once a year.

“We wanted to do more to honour those people and now thanks to Mears we are able to do that.

“Our weekly Local Hero Award will allow us to single out so many more people who are deserving of recognition.

“It will also allow our readers to tell us about the real heroes in our communities.”

Mears managing director Gary Lester said: “Mears works in partnership with Brighton and Hove City Council delivering repairs, maintenance and installation works.

“Working in people’s homes takes us to the heart of the communities which we serve, which is a unique privilege.

“We also recognise our responsibilities to our communities as a local services provider and employer.

“This is a chance to recognise our unsung local heroes – the people who make our society a better place to live.

“This is our opportunity to simply say thank you.”
