A policeman is marking the first anniversary of his heart attack by taking part in a sponsored walk for charity.

Gordon Lambert is aiming to raise as much as he can to support the rehabilitation unit at the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath.

The money will be given to the Sussex Heart Charity, which supports cardiac services provided by the Princess Royal and Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.

Mr Lambert, 53, from Burgess Hill, said he had arranged with the charity to use his funds for the Princess Royal unit.

He said: “I’ve always been the active type and done a lot of long distance walking.

“I didn’t smoke and drank relatively rarely so I wasn’t exactly a candidate for a heart attack.

“It turned out I had a hereditary condition which affected my cholesterol.

“I was originally treated at the Princess Royal before being sent to the Royal Sussex where I had an angioplasty and a stent fitted.

“This was followed up by the rehab back in the Princess Royal.

“I was fortunate and have made a good recovery thanks to the staff at both hospitals and I wanted to do something as a thank you for the care I received.

“This walk is the first big thing I have done since having my heart attack but I have been careful with my preparation and I’m looking forward to it.

“I’m feeling very well at the moment and I think it is very important to get on with life after an experience like this.

“Now that it has been a year, it is time for reflection and I know how lucky I am.”

The walk will be taking place over the weekend of April 27/28 at RAF Cosford in Shropshire.
