A new café and restaurant is set to open in the centre of Brighton.

David Wicks and his partner Sarah Bennet have applied for permission to open Loaf and Spout in Upper Gardner Street.

Officers at Brighton and Hove City Council have recommended that the application is granted at a planning committee meeting on April 24.

Mr Wicks said he and his partner had dropped their plans to open late all week after concerns from residents.

The proposed restaurant is on the site of the Thorne’s Foods grocery store which closed in February last year.

Mr Wicks runs a recruitment company called EU Recruitment on the upper floors of the building.

He said: “We have completely changed our original licence application with regards to the provision of alcohol and the opening hours.

“All alcohol will be served with meal food only. During the week there will be no serving of alcohol from 8pm and the restaurant will be shut by 8.30pm from Monday to Thursday.”

Pete West, a Green councillor for the St Peter’s and North Laine ward, who objected to the original application, said he did not object to the new proposals.
