A national award for an East Sussex animal charity means more to its founder than his MBE.
Trevor Weeks’ East Sussex Wildlife Rescue and Ambulance Service has been named the Local Animal Charity of the Year at the British Animal Honours 2013.
He has been rescuing sick, injured and orphaned wildlife since 1985 but did not found the charity until 11 years later.
Mr Weeks said: “This award means more to me than the MBE I received last year as it is for the charity as a whole and is recognition that our volunteers and supporters are a fabulous bunch of people who genuinely care about our local wildlife.”
The charity, which has about 70 volunteers, receives about 2,500 calls a year for help.
Mr Weeks said: “It is amazing that we have achieved this award and it is all thanks to our supporters and volunteers, they have made this organisation what it is today.
“People tend to focus on me, when this charity would not exist without all our hard-working volunteers and the funding provided by our fantastic supporters.”
