Families have been advised to “judge for themselves” whether to visit Brighton seafront during the March for England parade tomorrow.

Police said last night that they were not going to tell residents to avoid the area despite expecting violent clashes between some 1,000 protesters.

Last year there were scuffles across the city and a handful of arrests when March for England protesters clashed with opponents.

A number of activists were injured, with bottles of urine being thrown and bins torched.

The police responded by sending in riot officers, horses and using pepper spray.

However a police spokesman last night said that the force would not be telling people to avoid this year’s event.

He said: “We have advised people that it is expected to be busy and that in the past there has been problems.

“We have advised that the event is happening but we are not going to say, ‘Don’t go down’.

“They will have to judge that for themselves.”

Threats of violence have been made on social network sites over the past weeks with The Mighty Brighton Infidels Facebook page displaying a poster titled: “Smash the Reds”.

It reads: “The UAF in Brighton plan untold violence next Sunday. Last year they did the same, last year we were not prepared. This year we are ready.”

Police have used special powers to close the A259 seafront road between the Palace Pier roundabout and the Odeon cinema in West Street.

The stretch will be closed between 10am and 3pm.

Madeira Drive will also be closed throughout the day because of a planned Jaguar car rally.

Apolice spokesman confirmed that the march would start no earlier than 12.30pm and finish no later than 2.30pm.

As a result there will be severe disruptions to the buses.

The number 77 and the City Sightseeing service will both terminate and restart from the Old Steine.

The 77 will run towards Devil’s Dyke up North Street via Imperial Arcade and Regent Hill to Churchill Square then on as normal.

The City Sightseeing service will go up North Street and along Western Road to Palmeira Square. It will then turn around at Palmeira Square and run towards the station and marina.

Services running between the Palace Pier roundabout and Rock Gardens will be diverted through Kemp Town in both directions from 10am until 3pm.
