One of Brighton's crematorium is being upgraded from Friday, April 26.
The £1.5 million works at Woodvale crematorium will include replacing the cremators, redecorating and putting new heaters and lights in the chapels.
Recapturing and recycling waste heat will also be part of the project, which plans to cut £42,000 a year from bills.
The crematorium will stay open while the work goes ahead, which will help the site to meet stringent new Government standards.
Most services will be held at Woodvale’s Extra-Mural Chapel, at the far end of the site from where the works are taking place.
The deputy chair of the council’s policy and resources committee, Leo Littman, said: “These works are essential for us to comply with legislation and to be able to continue to offer this essential public service for years to come.
“For the sake of our bereaved families we will do everything we can to maintain our usual high standards of service.
“We will also work with our local funeral directors to minimise any inconvenience.”
