Tuck bags have been introduced to hospital wards to help prevent the spread of infection.
The resealable, water-resistant bags are given to every patient at Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust so they can safely store food by their beds.
The aim is to prevent food being contaminated with airborne micro-organisms.
Bugs such as clostridium difficile and norovirus can be transmitted by airborne particles and can potentially contaminate loose items of food such as fruit that are brought in by patients and visitors.
The idea was the brainchild of Paula Tucker, head of nursing patient safety and quality.
