This is the multi-sports play area designed in memory of Connor Saunders.

The blueprint for Connor’s Court, which is set to be built in Rottingdean in memory of the 19-year-old, will now be considered by planning officers before a decision is made in June.

The £70,000 facility is planned for the site of the old swimming pool on the Undercliff Walk between the village and the sea.

The Play Area in Rottingdean Committee (PARC) is behind the project which has gathered momentum following the death of Connor after he was fatally punched during an argument in April 2012.

Plans reveal that the proposed court will be blue to match the colours of Chelsea, his favourite football team.

The fenced-off area will provide facilities for football, cricket and basketball with posts, hoops and wickets.

The surface is set be made of polymeric which is often used for tennis courts and athletics tracks.

It is considered a more forgiving and flexible surface than tarmac or concrete.

There will also be a bike rack and various seating facilities.

The area is already used by youngsters for kick-arounds. But, as PARC officials made clear in the application, this practice is damaging the cliff face.

A ball which is lodged in a cavity high up in the cliff is currently causing problems with youngsters trying to knock it free.

It is estimated that the park will cost in the region of £70,000 but no money for it is set to come from Brighton and Hove City Council.

PARC has already raised the majority of the cash through The Argus Appeal, charity shop donations, fundraising nights and sales of a charity single.

Brighton and Hove City Council has set a date of June 21 to decide on the plans.

The Connor Saunders Foundation, which was set up following the 19-year-old’s death, has already raised thousands of pounds for local causes.

Connor’s former football team, Peacehaven FC, won the County League Division One title on Saturday.

His father Shaun, who is the manager of the team, said: “In the wake of what happened last year to my son we have stuck together and won it and we are dedicating the win to Connor.

“He is our inspiration. It has been an emotional year.”
