A FATHER was overwhelmed with emotion when his teenage son woke from a coma and was able to give him a hug.

Jordan White, 17, of Regent Street, Rowhedge, fell through the roof of a derelict building at Rowhedge Wharf.

He suffered a serious head injury and spent weeks in a coma after being airlifted to Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

Jordan had emergency operations and is still unable to speak but family and friends are delighted at his progress.

Dad Kevin Grant said he is making steady but slow progress and the family now plan to enter the Brighton marathon as part of a team of at least six to raise money for the Essex Air Ambulance whose paramedics helped save his life.

He said: “He had a tracheotomy but is awake and we can talk to him and ask for a hug and he can respond.

“We wondered whether he would ever wake up so it was a big moment.”

Mr Grant explained some of the brainiest people in the world at the hospital cannot predict his recovery but said everyone is keeping their fingers crossed and his friends have been amazing.

He said: “These are 16 and 17-year-olds who have stood by him. It is not easy for them to come to Cambridge but come they do and I have been so impressed by them all.

“And the air ambulance is amazing. They need £250,000 a month and are not Government funded, although they should be, so we want to do what we can to help.”
