A host of household names, including musician Nick Cave, Crime writer Peter James, actress Fay Ripley, comedian David Walliams and athlete Sally Gunnell have put their artistic skills to use for a charity auction.

They joined 70 others in creating works for a silent art auction as part of the Rotary Club of Brighton’s centenary.

The event will see fundraisers bidding on the pieces without any knowledge of who is behind them.

All money raised from the event, which is being held this evening, will go to the Martlets Hospice.

Peter Jukes OBE, the president of the Rotary Club of Brighton, said: “We decided to approach a number of well known artists and other celebrities in the area and asked them to send in a piece of work for the auction.

“We had a fantastic response – we hope to raise thousands on the night.”

Most sent in their entries with a concealed signature on the back. However, others didn’t. Australian rock star Nick Cave sent in a self-portrait with his signature visible on the front while David Walliams posted a signed photograph of himself.

Mr Jukes OBE added: “David Walliams was very funny. He responded by saying that he would like to take part but couldn’t draw. So instead he sent a signed photograph.”

Among the other well known figures are actress Carol Cleveland, presenter Nicholas Owen and actor Philip Franks.

A number of well known artists also responded, including Dion Salvador Lloyd, Cecil Rice, Shirley Trevena, Jill Tattersall, Sophy Rickett and Lucy Parker.

The event is being held in the Brighton Dome Founders Room from 7pm. Entry is £5 per person and includes a free glass of wine and music from the Brighton Jazz Co-Operative.
