A group of parents organised a road closure so children could play without the worry of traffic.
Members of Southdown Rise Residents’ Association got in touch with Brighton and Hove City Council, which helped to organise the closure.
The pilot event in Southdown Avenue, between Springfield Road and Florence Road, was a great success, according to organiser Valerie Knight.
She said: “Children of all ages attended with their parents, and the event was a great way to help strengthen our community.
“Specialists in child development believe that children need to experience some play situations in which they organise themselves, solve problems, assess some risks and solve their own social challenges without constant input from adults.
“We want our children to have the opportunity to get to know each other, be recognised by neighbours, play children-led games, to develop pride in their own neighbourhood and get some physical activity and fresh air.”
Play-streets were launched in Bristol by a group of parents and have already been introduced successfully in the Brighton and Worthing areas.
