Newhaven marching band closing due to lack of interest
1:40pm Monday 8th July 2013 in News
A town's youth marching band is closing because of waning interest from young people.
Geoff Donaldson set up the Newhaven Youth Marching Band in 1986 and has performed across Europe as well as numerous events in Sussex.
But nowthe 74-year-old said the trustees have been forced to wind the band up, as only three young musicians remained.
He said: “It has been going a long time. But the youngsters all seem to be interested in computer games and TV these days instead.
“We started with 15 members and at our peak we had 35.
“But we have had two jobs this year and only had nine turn out – four of which were adults.”
Before the band performed at Lindfield’s annual village day two more members said it would be their last event – sealing the fate of the group.
He said it was “very sad” and has thanked everyone who has helped with the band over the 27 years.
The remaining instruments will be sold where possible, with any money left over split between five charities. After the final committee meeting the charity commission will also be informed.
