The historic Rottingdean windmill has been defaced with graffiti.

The act of vandalism is believed to have taken place overnight.

It comes as the pitch and putt where the windmill is located was closed earlier in the year with the council filling in the holes with concrete.

Despite negotiations between interested parties and the council, it has remained closed so far this summer.

The windmill, called the Beacon Mill, was built in 1802 and is a grade II listed smock mill.

UPDATE: This morning (Tuesday) Brighton and Hove City Council said its Cityclean teams had visited the windmill and cleaned off the graffiti.
