Bede's School win Sussex-wide competition to serve up 12 titles
Bede’s School made full use of their home advantage by claiming 12 titles in the 2013 Sussex County Tennis Championship.
Nearly 800 Sussex tennis players competed for their schools throughout the summer months in the championships hosted this year by Bede’s School.
Over a series of nine days, from March until June, young tennis players from across the county battled the wind, rain and occasional sunshine to see if their school could take trophies in each of the nine age groups, from under-seven to under-18.
On each of these days the teams were made up of four players who com- peted in the boys or girls events.
Julie Salmon, ex-England international player, ex-Bede’s pupil and director of tennis at the school said: “We saw fine tennis being played by so many budding young stars and fair play over all the days.
“Enormous thanks must go out to all who competed and to their teachers.”
The championships kicked off on March 8 with the under-seven and under-eight events and trophies for both boys and girls went to the Bede's teams.
It was the under-18 age group’s turn on May 2, with Bede’s again taking both winning trophies.
Five days later the under-nines took to the courts with the Bede’s boys emerging victorious, and in the same week the under-16 tournament took place with both the Bede’s boys and girls teams claiming the titles.
The under-11 competition was also fought out in May, with Bede’s winning the Boys event.
By this time the normal schools tennis season was in full flow, and May 16 saw the under-ten event where Bede’s boys took home the trophy.
Moving into June, the under-14 event was again hotly contested, but the Bede's Boys came out on top.
The final tournament of the season then took place on June 13, and Bede’s finished in style by winning both the boys and girls under-15 titles.
