Kids take part in Virgin Active's swimming gala
Dozens of children made a splash in an annual nationwide swimming gala at the end of June.
More than 65 children from all over Sussex competed in a day of swimming competitions, organised by Virgin Active.
The youngsters, aged between six and 16-years-old, tested their skills in strokes including front crawl, back stroke, breast stroke and butterfly at the Virgin Active Health and Racquet Club in Brighton.
Mums, dads and staff were also put to the test in special adult races which were organised for the day.
Top performers of the weekend included six-year-old Abigail Martin, who won three gold medals in the 25m butterfly, back stroke and front crawl.
Another star of the day was Theo Mantale, who won gold medals in all of his events, the 50m butterfly, 50m front crawl and 100m individual relay.
Glen Heidke, head of junior programming at Virgin Active, said: “The 2013 Swim Gala series is bigger and better than ever, with more clubs entering from across the UK.
“It’s fantastic that so many children are getting involved in the competition and showing real progress in their confidence and ability.
“We currently run classes for all ages and abilities and hope to see more people join us to learn how to swim in 2013.”
Everyone who took part in the gala was presented with a medal plus a trophy for the winning team.
The free events were supported by Speedo and swimming governing body ASA to raise money for Virgin Active’s charity partner, Sparks.
Sir Richard Branson, Virgin Active founder, said: “Swimming is such a fun sport that can be enjoyed by all ages and fitness levels.
“I’m thrilled that so many of our younger members have been inspired to get involved in this year’s swim gala series at Virgin Active, really making a splash across the country.”
Last year more than 3,600 children took part in Virgin Active’s swimming gala and organisers hope this summer’s competition will see even more competitors at 13 venues in the UK.
