New bin strike threat in Brighton and Hove
10:39am Saturday 20th July 2013 in News
Binmen could be back on strike by the end of the month after a union vote on a new pay deal was declared “too close to call”.
Cityclean workers could walk out as early as July 31 following the bal- lot which saw members split on whether to accept the council’s new offer.
If union members opt for industrial action, GMB branch secretary Mark Turner warned the strike would last weeks.
He added: “We are not talking days or a week like last time.
It will be substantial. “We will reveal the decision on Wednesday.”
Union bosses had hoped to reveal the outcome yesterday but decided to put the decision back to give them more time to “interpret” the results.
Mr Turner described the outcome as “complex” and “far from clear cut”.
He added: “The proposal impacts different members of the workforce in different ways.”
