A jilted lover who beat a disabled man to death in a jealous rage has been on the run from a Sussex prison for a month – but police only released the information today.
Derek Passmore went on the run from Ford Open Prison on June 22 while on day release.
Sussex Police said Passmore, who beat to death Paul Craig, 34, who was crippled was arthritis, was “not assessed as a danger”.
But they also warned members of the public not to approach him.
A Sussex Police statement released this morning said: “Police are searching for 48-year old Derek Passmore, who absconded from Ford Prison on Saturday, June 22, and has not been seen since.
“Passmore, who is described as 6ft 1in, of stocky build, with brown hair and hazel eyes, also had a goatee beard when last seen.
“He left prison to go on a resettlement day release that morning and did not return at 7.30pm in the evening.
“He was serving a sentence of life imprisonment for the murder of a man in a flat in Hampton, Middlesex, in October 1996.”
Detective Chief Inspector David Wardley-Wilkins of Sussex Police said: “Passmore is not currently assessed as a direct physical threat to the, hence his being in an open prison, but in view of the seriousness of his offence, and the fact that so far there has been no sighting of him, we seek public assistance in reporting any information that may help us to find him.
"He has had connections in Maidstone, South West London including Twickenham, Sutton and Kingston, and elsewhere in the South East, although he has no specific association with Sussex.
"The Metropolitan Police in particular are making active enquiries to find him.”
Passmore killed Mr Craig in 1996.
According to newspaper reports at the time, Mr Craig, an unemployed bachelor from Fulton Close, Hampton, was viciously beaten and left dying in Starling Walk, just ten minutes from his home.
Passmore smashed the skull of Mr Craig in Hampton, after deciding Mr Craig was seeing his estranged girlfriend.
Anyone who sees Passmore, or who knows where he maybe, is asked not to approach him but to contact 101 quoting Sussex Police Serial 1532 of 22/6. You can also call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
