Police have confirmed that one lane westbound is hoped to reopen at 6pm but it will not be until the early hours of the morning at least before it fully reopens as the central barrier must first be repaired.
Alan Robins, Labour transport spokesman and councillor for South Portslade, said: “It’s taken half an hour for me to get half a mile on the A27. It’s a nightmare – extremely frustrating.”
The A27 closure is having a serious impact on traffic elsewhere with diversions getting blocked as motorists try to come off the Holbush Interchange.
Sam Wood, manager of American Golf, near the Shoreham by-Pass sliproad, said: “It’s horrendous, completely chock-a-block. Everyone’s trying to come off at the roundabout but it’s all at a standstill. People can’t even get out of Tesco.
“That tunnel is closed quite frequently and as soon as it happens it gets really bad. It’s the straw that breaks the camel’s back.”
Update on the A27:
Both lanes are still closed between Holmbush and Southwick.
Police said the eastbound lane could open at 5.30pm but the westbound was not likely to reopen until at least 6pm.
Even then only one lane of the westbound A27 will reopen.
Drivers are being urged to avoid the A27 between Brighton and Shoreham after a serious accident near the Southwick Tunnel.
The dual carriageway has been closed after a lorry travelling eastbound hit a slow-moving people carrier, turned over and went through the central reservation.
The westbound carriageway of the A27 has been blocked by the overturned lorry while debris caused by the collision and the striking of the central barriers has forced the closure of the eastbound side as well.
Motorists are warned to find an alternative route and traffic is likely to be very heavy for a period afterwards.
At 5pm it was hoped that the eastbound carriageway would reopen and that at least one lane westbound will be opened.
The A27 is closed between Hangleton and Holmbush.
Sergeant Tony Crisp, of Arundel Road Policing Unit, said: "I would urge drivers to stay well away from the area until after 5pm as there is very heavy congestion on the A27 and adjoining roads already.
"I would like to thank drivers for their patience but we cannot reopen the A27 until it is safe to do so. Specialist equipment is being brought in to remove the lorry and the Highways Agency must also repair the central reservation.
"We anticipate this could be done by 5pm but cannot guarantee this."
