Britain's first ever Trans Pride event graced the streets of the city at the weekend.

The groundbreaking celebration of the transgender community ran from Friday until Sunday and featured film screenings, a dance party, stage performers and a mini festival.

The festival, held in New Steine Gardens on Saturday, included music, poetry, comedy and stalls while film screenings at Komedia and the Duke of York Cinema took place on Friday.

Event organisers said Trans Pride aimed to inspire and promote inclusivity of all trans, intersex and gender variant people by promoting equality and diversity.

Trans Pride support spread across the city as Brighton and Hove City Council and Sussex Police both hoisted a Trans Pride flag outside the civic building and Brighton police station respectively.

Sussex Police also donated £400 to Trans Pride from the Police Property Act Fund.

Councillor Phleim Mac Cafferty said he was “proud” Brighton was the first UK city to host Trans Pride.

The Argus:

He added: “Our own Trans community is one of the most marginalised groups in Brighton & Hove, and events like this help to challenge the discrimination and prejudice they face.”

The Argus says...

Our article of Monday, July 28, covering the excellent Pride events of the weekend has caused some concern given the juxtaposition of Doggy Pride with Trans Pride.

It certainly was not our intention to be disrespectful to this important first, not just for the city but for Britain.

This was a landmark event and deserved more prominence, which we are happy to provide here and in the newspaper.
