Elderly man injured in A27 crash dies
9:38am Wednesday 31st July 2013 in News
A man who was a passenger in a car when it crashed on the A27 has died in hospital.
The 79-year-old man from hassocks was the front passenger in a black Vauxhall Zafira which collided with a lorry on the eastbound carriageway of the A27 east of the Southwick tunnel shortly after 1pm on thursday, July 25.
He was taken by air ambulance to Southampton General hospital with head injuries where his initial injuries were thought to be serious but not life-threatening.
However, his condition deteriorated and he died in hospital yesterday afternoon.
The 44-year-old driver of the lorry, from Doncaster, was treated at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton for minor injuries and was then arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury through dangerous driving.
He was released on bail until 16 September while police enquiries continue.
The 49-year-old male driver of the Vauxhall, also from Hassocks, suffered leg and chest injuries and was also taken to Royal Sussex County Hospital for treatment but was later discharged.
After the crash the lorry crossed the central reservation and overturned, blocking the westbound carriageway.
The eastbound carriageway was also closed due to the damage of the barrier and the VAuxhall wreckage.
It is thought the Vauxhall had been travelling slowly, possibly with its hazard lights flashing, approximately half a mile east of the Southwick tunnel when the crash happened.
Police are still keen to speak to any drivers who saw the collision take place or who saw either of the vehicles involved in the time elading up to the collision.
