Sussex have launched an investigation after England spinner Monty Panesar was given a fixed penalty notice for being "drunk and disorderly" following an incident at a Brighton nightclub.

The 31-year-old was ejected from the Shooshh club in Brighton and then urinated in public, it was confirmed on Wednesday morning.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "A 31-year-old man received a fixed penalty notice for being drunk and disorderly after being seen urinating in public near the Shooshh Club in King's Road Arches, Brighton, around 4.13am on Monday (August 5)."

Sussex confirmed they were looking into the matter, saying in a statement: "Sussex County Cricket Club can confirm that an incident took place involving Monty Panesar in the early hours of Monday 5th August.

"The matter is under full investigation and the club will make no further comment at this stage."

It was reported in The Sun that the former Northamptonshire player urinated from the promenade above the venue on to doormen standing below before he was hauled back to the club where police were called.

Panesar, who joined Sussex in 2010, was part of England's 14-man squad for the third Ashes Test at Old Trafford which concluded on Monday, but did not play.

He has played 48 Tests for England and taken 164 wickets, but was left out of the party for the fourth Ashes Test which starts this Friday in Durham.

It is not the first nightclub incident to have involved an England player this summer.

In June, opening batsman Joe Root was punched by Australian counterpart David Warner in the Walkabout bar in Birmingham, with the latter suspended by the Baggy Green and missing the first two Tests as a consequence.

Photographs have also emerged on Wednesday showing a number of the England team on a night out following the Old Trafford Test, which ended in a draw that ensured Andy Flower's men retained the Ashes.

Flower is a known disciplinarian and is unlikely to be pleased at Panesar's indescretion or at photographs to have circulated of Root, Tim Bresnan and Graeme Swann smoking in a Manchester street.
