Beach tennis comes to Brighton
4:30pm Sunday 11th August 2013 in News
THE European beach tennis championships got under way yesterday – following a spectacular opening ceremony.
Players from 20 nations paraded around Brighton’s Yellowave courts before mayor Denis Cobb declared the event open.
It’s the first time the tournament has been held in the UK in its seven-year history.
Matches will be held over the next two days with entry free to all fixtures.
There are a number of Brighton and Hove-based players in the mix, with Chrissy Batty, Sophia Marks, Natasha Khan and Suzy Madge all hoping to take advantage of the home support.
Kasia Chmielewska, tournament director, said: “A lot of work has gone into this and we are really excited to be in Brighton.”
However, red-faced tournament officials were forced to apologise following the ceremony after mixing up the Slovakia and Slovenia national flags.
