Man shocked after being rugby tackled for £5 note in Hove street
A 66-year-old was left “shocked” after he was rugby tackled for a £5 note.
Mehdi Sheibami was walking home with wife Marian when they spotted the folded money on the floor by a car in Rutland Road, just off Portland Road, Hove.
But as he picked it up, the pensioner was attacked by one of four burly men who had also been walking towards the note.
Mrs Sheibami, 58, was in her wheelchair at the time. She told The Argus: “I pointed out a five pound note to my husband. He went to pick it up and in a few seconds he was on the floor after being rugby tackled by one of the four men.
“He rolled over twice and was left with a sore thigh and bruises.”
The men walked off after the attack, which happened at 1.30pm last Tuesday, without turning around to see if Mr Sheibami, 66, had picked himself up.
Mrs Sheibami said she and her husband were in shock after the incident.
She said: “We cannot believe something like this could happen in broad daylight.
“It was a scary experience – I have never seen my husband fall, let alone see him assaulted.”
The couple, who have made the journey from the bus stop home hundreds of times in the last 27 years, live in Montgomery Street.
Mrs Sheibami described the men as being in their early 40s and of stocky build.
She continued: “We were in shock as it all happened so fast. It affected me at first, but now I am determined not to let it get to me. I have made the journey many times since.
“Mehdi was shaken at first and did not want to call the police. However, we reported the case the next day and felt a sense of empowerment.
“No one would expect this kind of thing to happen in the day time, and the attack was even more surprising considering I am in a wheelchair.”
She added: “I don’t smile at people like I used to, because you never know.”
Police said they were informed on August 7 about an assault at 1.30pm on August 6 at the junction with Rutland Road and Portland Road in Hove.
A spokesman said: “The victim's wife reported her husband had bent down to pick up a £5 note on the floor when a man pushed him over, took the note and ran away. The suspect is described as white, stocky build and around 5ft 9in.
Anyone who has information or saw what happened is asked to contact police on 101 quoting serial 1397 of 7/8.
