Communities Secretary Eric Pickles sees chains to Hastings Pier broken as work begins

A Government minister joined the celebrations as a town reclaimed ownership of its pier.
The lock over the pier’s gates was cut to signal the start of a £14 million refurbishment project.
Work starts this month and the Hastings Pier Charity has pledged to favour local people and businesses in rebuilding and running the pier.
Initial work will be to renovate the pier’s pavilion and build a new visitor centre while a restaurant and an arts centre are planned.
Mr Pickles said: “It’s yet another great example of what is happening across the country when government gives power back to communities to decide how best to run things locally.”
