Hero football fans rescued a man who fell headfirst onto rail tracks just moments before a train arrived.

Jay Packham and three friends were on their way home after watching Albion play at the Amex when a drunken man plummeted from the platform at Lewes station.

Dressed in their Albion shirts, the pals from Hastings rushed to the man’s rescue and hauled him back to safety – shortly before a train pulled in.

Mr Packham, 30, said the ordeal was “surreal and scary”.

He said: “We were just waiting for our train home when we saw this guy who had clearly had a few drinks.

“He was wandering around and then he suddenly fell off the platform onto the tracks headfirst.

“It was like he was diving into a swimming pool.”

Horrified Mr Packham and his friends Kevin Ide, Mike Bryan, Daniel Taylor and Zena Huggins swiftly sprang into action.

They rushed forward, grabbed the man’s arms and managed to drag him back on to the platform to safety.

Mr Packham said: “We managed to get him up onto the platform eventually.

“The train came a minute later. It was pretty scary.”

But the man was in no mood to thank the selfless rescuers who had saved his life.

Instead, he told bystanders he had “no idea what just happened”.

After his nosedive in the station, the friends handed the man over to station guards and he was helped on to a train home.

A spokesman for Southern Rail: “A Southern member of staff was on platform three when he heard a commotion on platform one.

“By the time he had gone across the bridge to platform one, the person had been helped back onto the platform by members of the public.

“The Victoria to Ore train arrived on platform one a few minutes after the person was safely back on the platform.

“The member of staff then stayed with the person until the next train to Eastbourne arrived.”
