A PENARTH producer working on his first feature length film is appealing for crowd sourced funding to back the project.

Jake Goddard is hoping to raise a total of £7,500 in 30 days, with the deadline November 15, so that work can begin filming it next year.

More than £1,000 has been raised for the film ‘Around the Corner’ in under a week and the project has already gathered support on social media sites Facebook and Twitter.

The science fiction film, which will be entirely filmed in Cardiff, is based on the premise that people are so busy thinking about the future that they don’t live in the present. In the film the leading character Tom Wilder attempts to ‘reintegrate’ people back into society, while attempting to hold his own relationship together with his partner Jessica.

Jake, who has previously worked on music videos, said that as the film was being crowd sourced it would be a ‘community based project’ and would connect the backers with the film.

“It’s become a popular way to fund films now,” he said.

“I like the idea of it being a community based project.

“I really want to build a network in Cardiff of writers, actors, music producers and other creative people to have some support for future projects.

“I have spent years making music by myself and it can be frustrating when you don’t have people with an outlet.”

Writer and director Tom Gatley, who has previously worked on short films that have been screened at the Cannes Short Film Corner, said he preferred the freedom of funding a film from members of the public rather than a larger distributor.

“I didn’t want to go for a big funding organisation.

“We can make films on our own if people help us make it independently.”

Every person that backs the film with funding will be given a range of rewards depending on the size of their donation. Those that donate large amounts will even be given the chance to star in the film as an extra, have a co-producer credit, a signed copy of the script, and get a ticket to the film premier in Cardiff.

“The first people to see it will be the backers, as they will have supported it from the start,” added Tom.

Jake, who grew up on Plassey Street, said they had already filmed the first seven minutes of the film “to show what we can do” and are hoping to film the rest of it next year and release it in the summer. The film is expected to be between 80 and 90 minutes long.

“We can then send it off for different festivals and stick it online,” he said.

“You never know, when you take it to festivals someone might pick it up.”

Former Ysgol Pen-y-Garth pupil Jake, 26, added that a feature film was on a “different scale” to the music videos he had previously worked on.

“It’s a bit more challenging but I’m ready to take the challenge on,” he said.

“It’s a bit scary but I believe you should do stuff that scares you.”
