The daughter of a woman who was hospitalised as a result of the treatment she received at a shamed care home has said she is appalled staff who worked there could “walk into other jobs”.

Judith Charatan, whose 89-yearold mother Doris Fielding was hospitalised as a result of the care she received while at Orchid View in Copthorne, spoke after an Argus investigation revealed area manager Sarah O’Mara was still in a job.

It later emerged that Mark Cash, regional operations director for Care UK, had also worked at Orchid View.

Mrs Charatan, of Crawley, said she believed care home workers felt they had “nothing to fear”.

Her mother became sick at Orchid View and lost a significant amount of weight to the point she had to be admitted to hospital.

Mrs Charatan believes if the home had not been shut down and her mother had been sent back, she would certainly have died there. Instead, she was referred to another home where she was well cared for until she died on Christmas Day in 2011.

Ms O’Mara was the manager who oversaw“institutional abuse”

at the home where 21 vulnerable adults died and she was personally criticised for medical errors and staff shortages.

She moved on after healthcare firmSouthern Cross closed Orchid View, but then was appointed with Care UK as a a regional director but left her role following the inquest.

Mrs Charatan, of Crawley, said: “How these people could walk straight into new jobs is beyond me and shows there is absolutely no accountability in the industry, even when the actions of individuals contribute to the deaths of numerous human beings.

“This must change, as until then I can’t see that any improvements will happen because care home managers have nothing to fear.

“Nothing can bringmumor any of the other former residents back but it will at least give us some peace of mind to know that their deaths were not completely in vain if it brings about a change to the way the industry is run and brings more accountability to prevent the same horrific neglect.”

Ian Christian from Irwin Mitchell solicitors added: “Questions remain about how the regulators of the industry cannot be effective enough to intervene when two former Orchid View managers gained employment after leaving Orchid View.”

Areviewinto the coroner’s findings was launched immediately after the inquest.

The spokesperson added: “Both Sarah O’Mara, appointed by Care UK as a regional manager in July 2013, and Mark Cash, appointed by Care UK in March 2013 as a regional operations director, have left the company.”
