A MAENCLOCHOG man has been given a three month suspended prison sentence after pleading guilty to animal welfare offences.
Gwilym Thomas, aged 42 of Lodor Fach Farm, Maenclochog, pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to three horses by failing to address their weight loss, at Haverfordwest magistrates court on October 22.
The court heard that an RSPCA officer visited the defendant’s farm in the Preseli mountains on April 13. He discovered one horse so weak that he was virtually unable to walk. In another field he found one dead horse and two other thin equines.
RSPCA inspector Richard Abbot said: "These were the thinnest horses I have ever seen in all my years of being an inspector. The defendant in this case deeply regrets his actions and I am hopeful therefore that no other animals will suffer in this way in future.”
In addition to a three month prison sentence suspended for 12 months, the defendant was also banned from keeping horses for five years and ordered to undertake 300 hours of community service.
