Members of a new youth police commission will be closely vetted to avoid a repeat of a high-profile embarrassment which befell a neighbouring force.

The office of the Sussex Police Crime Commissioner has announced all members of its voluntary youth commission will have their references closely checked before being accepted to the newly created body.

In April the country’s first youth crime commissioner Paris Brown made a tearful resignation from her post in Kent after offensive comments were found on her Twitter site.

All applications, open for 14 to 25-years-old until December 20, will have to include a named professional and a personal reference.

Organisers have promised no individual will be appointed without both references being thoroughly checked.
