A University of Sussex professor has been named as one of Red Magazine's women of the year.

Biochemist Louise Serpell, who researches Alzheimer's, was named pioneer of the year at a ceremoney celebrating women's achievements. 

She joined Great British Bake-Off judge Mary Berry, fashion designer Alice Temperley and blogger Jack Monroe.

Other stars honoured at Red's Hot Women Awards 2013 include Birmingham-born singer-songwriter Laura Mvula, 27, for her debut album Sing To The Moon.

Judges included BBC Breakfast presenter and Strictly Come Dancing star Susanna Reid and novelist and former MP Louise Mensch.

Red magazine editor-in-chief Sarah Bailey said: ''We are delighted to be celebrating the achievements of some of Britain's most powerful, talented and dynamic women.

"It is so important, in today's challenging working world, to acknowledge the incredible skills of our country's female talent."
